You know those days when nothing seems to be going right? You stumble, trip, then grip on to something so you won’t fall, but, instead you slice your palm on a nail in the wall you tried holding on to? All because you were rushing to get to a meeting for work on your weekend, that upon waiting over an hour for, you find out you weren’t required anymore? You get back to your car only to find a parking fine and think it just can’t get worse than this.
You arrive home only to realize that an incision from the major surgery you had three weeks ago is horribly infected. So you drive a two-hour round trip – in tears all the way – to see the surgeon because your health depends on it.
Packet of antibiotics in hand, and complete exhaustion running through your body, finally you get back home to an empty house, crying what seems like an ocean of tears and questioning the purpose of your life and how unfulfilled you are. You sit on the couch like a vegetable trying to find meaning, wondering if it’s worth going on.
Yes, that was my day from hell, and yes looking back now I’m glad it happened. I finally decided to stop asking the universe “why?” and stopped searching for answers. Because you can’t search for answers you already know deep in your heart. This bad day was my push from the universe, to PUT things into perspective and CHANGE my perspective, before that push became a shove.
It was the wakeup call I needed. And that’s when I realized, this is how the universe spoke to me, speaks to us. I realized that this frustration was the language of the gods.
Messages like this, the ones that shake us up, the ones that hit home, the ones that get us off our backsides to make changes come in many forms and in many “languages”. I mean, that these messages come in the form of different people, situations, challenges, frustrations and sources in a way so perfect, so rightly timed, so rightly formed that just click with us to awaken us.
Sometimes it’s Tony Robbins with a hardcore, high energy, in-your-face wake up call that resonates with you and gets you into gear. It could be a soul baring Oprah interview that makes you think twice about who you really are and where your life is heading, it could Maya Angelou’s story of will and bravery that awakens strength and courage within you to pursue a dream you left sitting on the back-burner.
Seeing or speaking to somebody less fortunate than you, the lyrics of a song, a talk with your mother or friend, an overheard conversation in the mall or that random talk with a stranger while you were both waiting to order coffee at Starbuck’s.
A coincidence, a quote or a conflict could be just the thing that awakens you to your calling. A situation, conversation, or a moment of frustration in the most unexpected location could be the perfect creation. And at that very moment, you will need no translation.
These words, signs, symbols and exchanges generally arrive when you least expect them, when your guard is down, when you are open, when you are vulnerable. All you have to do is be prepared and listen. Not only with your ears, but with your heart, your soul, your mind and your intuition. And there will lie the answer you have been yearning for, leaving no doubt that the universe has been listening to your every thought and word and in response bringing you exactly what you need at exactly the right time.
How has the universe spoken to you? And what did it say?
